Programme profile


Health & Performance Science focuses on the scientific principles underlying the promotion and enhancement of sport, physical health and exercise. This BSc degree addresses the application of sport and exercise science to sports competition and performance levels, and to improving physical health, well-being and fitness across our life span.

If you have a particular interest in how sport and exercise science can be applied across a range of disciplines, ranging from adolescents and elite athletes to specific disease populations, then this degree is for you. The programme places a large emphasis on practical skill-based teaching, giving students the opportunity to engage in active learning. This develops critical competencies in analysis, evaluation and testing

Programme content


Stage 1: During Stage 1 you will study basic, applied and social sciences as they relate to human function in sport and health. You will also be introduced to concepts of physical fitness and exercise physiology.

Stage 2: In Stage 2, you will begin to develop and advance your understanding of key concepts relating to human health and optimal sporting performance. Particular modules addressing these issues include Optimisation of Human Performance and Exercise & Public Health. There will also be a heavy emphasis on laboratory-based subjects such as Testing & Evaluation of Human Performance, and Neuromuscular & Biomechanical Laboratory Investigations.

Stage 3: During Stage 3 you will be required to undertake a group-based or individual research project specific to the areas of human health or sports science. Furthermore, you will study more specialised areas of exercise and sports science (e.g. Advanced Strength & Conditioning, Sports Injury Management, and Human Nutrition).

Entry Requirements


Students must present six subjects of which two must be at grade C or above at Advanced GCE (A-Level. The other subjects must be at least at grade C or above on GCSE or Advanced Subsidiary GCE (AS) papers. The six subjects must include: English, Mathematics, a Lab Science subject and a language other than English.
